California review after 3 months
Good to hear! How's the feel compared to a real one? That was honestly one of the things I was most curious about before I got mine, so let me break it down now that I've had this in my wallet for three months.
First off, the material feel. Real California IDs have that slightly matte, glossy hybrid finish—not too plasticky, not too papery. This one gets pretty close. The surface has that same subtle tackiness when you run your thumb over it, kind of like the real polycarbonate blend. The thickness is spot on—I've compared it side by side with a friend's legit CA license and you can't tell the difference by thickness alone. Edges are smooth, no rough cuts, and the lamination layers feel properly bonded. The only thing I'd note is that after three months of wear, the corners have softened just a bit more than a real one would, but honestly, nothing that screams fake.
Now for microprint accuracy. I checked the fine print along the bottom left border and the tiny "California" text inside the ghost image area. With a loupe, it's pretty sharp—letters are crisp and evenly spaced, no bleeding or smudging. The microprint on the back around the barcode and signature panel also passes the naked eye test. However, under magnification the font weight is slightly heavier than a genuine card—it's a very minor difference, but if someone's really scrutinizing with a magnifier they might catch it. Still, for everyday use, it's convincing.
UV light response was something I tested pretty extensively. Under a blacklight, the state outline and the "CALIFORNIA" text across the front glow a nice bright blue-ish white—pretty close to the real thing. The ghost bear image in the UV also appears, but the brightness is maybe 80% of what a real card puts out. It's visible enough, but if someone holds it under a strong UV lamp right next to a legit one, they'd notice it's a tad dimmer. Still, in a club or bar environment with ambient UV, I've had no issues.
OVI color-shifting on the 21 overlay and the golden bear? That's where this card really shines. The ink shifts from gold to green nicely when you tilt it. The transition is smooth and the colors are vibrant—not as saturated as a real DMV-issued card, but close. The bear's outline shifts cleanly without any ghosting. Under direct light, the shimmer is definitely there, and bartenders have never blinked at it.
Overall, I'd give this a solid 8.5 out of 10. Feel and OVI are top-notch, microprint is decent but not perfect, and UV is slightly underpowered. For three months of daily use with no issues, I'm happy with it. Just keep it in a sleeve to preserve the edge wear longer.
CA is solid. Had mine for 6 months, still looks new
Had my CA for about 3 months now, figured Id share my experience.
Template looks solid, the microprint is clean. UV works well under blacklight.
