California review after 3 months

posted by kh546 6 months ago 800 views 3 comments

Had my CA for about 3 months now, figured Id share my experience.

Template looks solid, the microprint is clean. UV works well under blacklight.

Used it at:

  • Multiple liquor stores - no issues
  • A few bars downtown - scanned fine
  • One club with a box scanner - passed

Overall very happy with it

Honestly, I've been meaning to post a proper follow-up after having my California for about three months now. Since you mentioned close calls, I'll get right into the nitty-gritty.

First off, the microprint accuracy is surprisingly decent. I've examined the "CALIFORNIA" text along the top border under a loupe, and the little "SACRAMENTO" lettering inside the state seal is crisp — no smudging or broken lines. The birth date digits are also well-defined — huge plus, because I've seen some copies where the numbers bleed together after a month of wear. Mine still look sharp.

Honestly, UV light response is where this thing really shines—literally. Under a standard blacklight, the custom pattern pops with the right bright blue-ish glow, but it's not so over-the-top that it screams fake. The state outline in the corner is there, and the "CA" ghosting is visible but not blinding. Brightness is about 80% of a real Cali ID I compared it against. The only minor letdown is the faint yellow thread — it's there, but could be a bit more vivid. Still, it passes most basic bar checks.

Now for the OVI — that's the color-shifting ink on the gold bear and the "California" state name. Under direct light, it transitions from a warm gold to a coppery green, which is pretty close to the real thing. The shift isn't quite as dramatic as the DMV original — the real one snaps between colors faster — but unless someone's tilting it repeatedly under a bright desk lamp, you won't get called out. I mean, I've had bouncers tilt it once or twice and then hand it back without a second look.

As for the card material feel, that's another strong point. The laminate has that slightly glossy, yet tactile "clamshell" feel that real IDs have. It bends just enough without creasing, and the edges are smooth — no rough cuts or peeling layers. After three months in my wallet, the corners are only slightly rounded, which honestly just makes it look more lived-in. The thickness is spot-on. It doesn't feel flimsy or too rigid like some PVC cards I've seen.

So, about your question on close calls — yeah, I've had a few. The strict bouncers in my area are no joke. One guy stared at the UV for a solid five seconds while I was sweating bullets, but he handed it back. Another time, a bouncer checked the OVI by tilting it sideways under a red light and just nodded. I think the key is that the microprint and UV are good enough to avoid an immediate gut-check rejection. The only close call I had was when a bouncer asked why the "California" text didn't feel raised — apparently some originals have a slight tactile difference from the printing process. I just played it cool and said, you know, my card was worn from sliding in and out of my wallet. It worked.

Overall, after three months of regular use at bars and clubs, I'd give this California a solid 8.5 out of 10. I'd take points off for the OVI not being perfect and the UV yellow thread being a bit faint, but everything else holds up well. If you're going into strict venues, just make sure you act confident — the card can only do so much. Hope that helps, let me know if you've had any close calls yourself.

Good to hear! How does the feel compare to a real one?
