California review after 3 months - thoughts?
Thanks for the kind words! Yeah, I've been carrying this California as my daily for about three months now, so I feel like I've got a pretty solid read on how it holds up.
Honestly, feel is probably the biggest thing everyone asks about. Out of the packet, it was a little on the shiny side compared to a real CA — kind of that fresh-from-the-printer slickness. But after a few weeks living in my wallet, rubbing against cards and denim, it settled down nicely. The texture now is pretty close, not exactly the same, but close enough that you'd have to be really looking for it to notice. The card stock weight feels right, it bends about the same, and it doesn't have that cheap flimsy plasticky vibe some older batches had. I'd say 85% of the way there on feel alone.
As for microprint, I busted out a loupe when I first got it. The fine lines around the bear and the state outline are crisp for the most part, but if you really zoom in, some of the tiny text gets a little soft around the edges. Not something you'd catch with the naked eye, but under magnification it's not 1:1 with a real DMV issue. Still, it passed a casual glance from a bouncer who actually looked at it under a light, so it's doing its job.
UV response is where it gets interesting. Under a blacklight, the state seal glows up in that classic greenish-yellow, and the California script across the middle pops. Brightness is decent — not as blinding as a real one, but visible and in the right spot. The color temperature leans a tiny bit more yellow than the real thing, but again, nobody's pulling out a UV spectrometer at the door. It reacts, it's there, and tbh it looks official enough.
The OVI color shift on the gold bear and the "21" overlay is honestly one of the better parts. Going from copper to green as you tilt it is pretty smooth, and the shift is noticeable without being too dramatic. It doesn't have that cheap glittery look some fakes do — the color transition feels integrated into the laminate, which is key.
After three months of daily use, no peeling, no fading, no delamination around the edges. The corners have softened up a bit from wallet wear, but that actually makes it look more lived-in and real. I'd give the overall package a solid 8 out of 10. It's not perfect, and an expert with a loupe and a real CA in hand could probably spot differences, but for standard use — bars, gas stations, corner stores — it's been totally reliable.
Did you have any close calls? The bouncers in my area are pretty strict
Had my CA for about 3 months now, figured Id share my experience.
Template looks solid, the microprint is clean. UV works well under blacklight.

Overall very happy with it
