California review after 3 months - thoughts?
Did you have any close calls? The bouncers in my area are pretty strict
Been carrying my California for about six months now, and I gotta say it's held up way better than I expected. After the first few weeks I was nervous about wear and tear, but honestly it still looks fresh out of the envelope. I'll get into the details since people keep asking about the finer stuff.
First, the microprint. I've checked it under a loupe a handful of times and the tiny text around the bear and the "California" header is crisp — no smudging or blurring. The line art on the state outline is pretty clean too. Some copies I've seen have sloppy micro letters that break apart under magnification, but this one holds its own. It's not perfect if you really pixel-peep at 10x, but it passes the casual glance test easily.
UV light is where it gets interesting, tbh. Under a blacklight the state shape glows a nice bright yellow-green, not too dim and not that cheap neon blowout. The "CALIFORNIA" text also lights up in a consistent golden tone. The overall UV pattern is positioned correctly and doesn't bleed outside the borders. I've compared it to a real CA under UV in a dim bar setting and the brightness and color temperature are close enough that nobody's called it out.
OVI is solid but not flawless. The big golden bear shifts from a coppery gold to a greenish-gold depending on the angle. It's not as sharp as a real DMV-issued ID where the color shift is super dramatic, but it's convincing in low light and under direct overhead lighting. The shine is there, just a little more glittery than the real thing. Still, for a six-month-old unit, the OVI hasn't flaked or worn off, which is more than I can say for some other IDs I've had in the past.
Now, the physical feel — that's what really impressed me. The card has that slight flex and weight that's hard to distinguish from a legit CA. The surface isn't overly glossy or matte; it sits right in between. The edges are smooth with no rough lamination lines. I've kept it in a regular wallet and the corners have only minor rounding from pocket wear, no delamination starting. If you take care of it, this thing will last a good year or more without looking too beat up.
Overall I'd give it a solid 9/10. Points off because the OVI could be a bit crisper on the color transition, and the microprint under 20x magnification shows some very faint stepping. But for six months of daily use? The DMV itself couldn't make a card that looks this good after half a year. If you're looking for a CA, this is a safe bet as long as you're not trying to hit a high-security club with UV scanners and trained bouncers.
Good to hear! How does the feel compare to a real one?
Really appreciate this post
Had my CA for about 3 months now, figured Id share my experience.
Template looks solid, the microprint is clean. UV works well under blacklight.

Overall very happy with it
