California review after 3 months - update

posted by lixiviate 7 months ago 706 views 3 comments

Had my CA for about 3 months now, figured Id share my experience.

Template looks solid, the microprint is clean. UV works well under blacklight.

Used it at:

  • Multiple liquor stores - no issues
  • A few bars downtown - scanned fine
  • One club with a box scanner - passed

Overall very happy with it

Hey, thanks for asking! Yeah, it's been like three months since I got this California, so I figured I'd give a proper breakdown. The feel was honestly one of the first things I checked—straight out of the package it had that slightly waxy, glossy finish that real CA IDs have, but after a few weeks of pocket carry it's softened up a bit. It's still a touch stiffer than a genuine one, but not enough to raise eyebrows during casual handling. The lamination edge is clean, no peeling so far, though the thickness feels maybe 0.1mm too thick if I'm being picky.

As for microprint, I checked those little "CALIFORNIA" lines around the bear and the ghost image with a loupe. They're readable under 10x, but the letters are slightly bolder than on a real DMV card—still passable unless someone's really scrutinizing with magnification. Honestly, the secondary microprint in the date fields is there, but it's a bit blurry on the edges.

UV light was like the biggest surprise. Under a standard 365nm blacklight, the state outline glows a nice golden-yellow, and the "CA" repeat pattern in the background is visible and consistent. The brightness is about 85% of what a real ID shows—not as punchy, but the color matches well. No weird blue or purple tint like some fakes have. I'd say it'll fool most bouncers and liquor store clerks without issue.

The OVI on the gold bear and the "California" text shifts from a copper-gold to a green-gold when you tilt it. It's not as crisp as the real thing—the shift is a little more gradual and the metallic flakes are slightly too large under magnification, but from arm's length it looks spot on. Honestly, no visible splotching or patchiness in the shift.

Overall I'd give this one a solid 7.5/10. The feel and UV are good, the OVI is decent but not perfect, and the microprint is honestly the weakest link. For day-to-day use in bars and stores it's been fine—no confiscations, no second looks. Just don't try it at a DMV or TSA checkpoint. Let me know if you want any specific photos or comparisons to a real CA.

Did you have any close calls? The bouncers in my area are pretty strict
