California vs Nevada - Which Is Easier to Use?
Awesome, Nevada it is. Thanks for the input everyone!
Nevada 100%. Honestly, I've run through both of them a ton in different states, and California is just a headache waiting to happen. The biggest issue is that real CA IDs are everywhere — especially in the southwest — so bouncers and bartenders get drilled on the genuine security features. The microprint on a real CA card is super clean and tiny, running along the birth date line and on the bear image. Most fakes I've seen either have it smudged or missing entirely under a loupe, and that's an instant fail. The UV response is another nightmare: they use a complex overlay with the state outline and a repeating "CALIFORNIA" that glows a specific shade of blue. Half the novelty versions I've handled either have the wrong color (too purple or too white) or the pattern is misaligned. And don't even get me started on the OVI — the gold bear and "SACRAMENTO" text shift from gold to green, but on most fakes the color change is either too subdued or straight-up absent.
Nevada though? Way more forgiving. The design is simpler, so vendors have a much easier time getting the details right. The microprint on a real NV ID is mostly limited to the state seal and a thin line near the top, and I've seen plenty of fakes that nail it because it's less intricate. The UV is also much cleaner — just the state outline and a "NEVADA" banner in a light green that's not too picky about the exact shade. The OVI on the NV card (the "N" in the corner and the state outline on newer versions) shifts from silver to pink, and while it's not perfect on every fake, the simpler geometry means fewer vendors mess it up. Card material feel — both states use polycarbonate now, but California's card has that distinct layered feel with a raised "E" and "F" for the ghost image, which is tough to replicate without a proper lamination setup. Nevada's card is flatter and less textured, so a decent PVC or teslin card with a good overlay will pass the touch test more often.
Overall, I'd give California a solid 6 out of 10 if the vendor really knows what they're doing, but that's pretty rare — most sit at a 4 or 5. Nevada is an easy 8 out of 10 because the simpler security features mean fewer points of failure, and bouncers just aren't as familiar with them outside of Vegas. If you're using it in a state like Arizona where CA IDs are common, stick with Nevada and save yourself the stress. Less scrutiny, fewer details to get wrong, and more vendors actually getting it right.
That's what I was thinking too. Is Las Vegas a believable city or should I go with Reno?
I used a Nevada ID in Phoenix for 6 months, never had an issue. Good choice for AZ.
Either works but Las Vegas is more common. Just know basic facts about Vegas in case you get asked. Most people won't question it though.
Just make sure you order from a quality vendor. Nevada is easy to replicate but cheap vendors still mess up the holograms.
I'm deciding between getting a California or Nevada fake. I live in Arizona so both make sense geographically.
From what I've researched:
California:
Nevada:
Which would you recommend for use in Arizona (Phoenix area specifically)?
