California vs New York - which state is easier to use?

posted by GusBus 10 months ago 661 views 4 comments
Planning to get either a CA or NY ID. Which one is generally easier to use and less scrutinized? I am on the east coast but heard CA IDs get less attention because people assume you are just visiting. Any thoughts from people who have used both?

NY is heavily scrutinized everywhere because it is so commonly faked. CA, FL, or TX are better choices for out of state use in my experience.

Yeah, you're totally spot on with that advice. I've been running with a California ID on the east coast for a while now and it's been smooth sailing for the most part. The thing is, bouncers and bartenders get drilled on their own state's templates—the holograms, the font placements, the UV patterns—but they barely have time to memorize what a California, Texas, or Florida ID is supposed to look like unless they work in a major tourist spot. Still, there are a few specific details that really make or break it, so here's what I've learned from my experience.

Microprint accuracy is a huge deal no matter which state you pick. On a real California ID, the microprint along the state seal and the "California" text at the top is crisp and consistent. I've seen reps where the microprint blurs together or is slightly misaligned—that's a dead giveaway if someone pulls out a loupe, which they rarely do. New York's microprint is similar but tucked inside the guilloche patterns around the portrait. Honestly, most places don't check microprint, but if you're flashing an out-of-state card, it's less likely anyone will scrutinize it that closely anyway.

UV response is another area where the difference shows. California's UV is pretty straightforward—the state outline glows orange, and there's some small text that pops up under blacklight. The brightness is decent, not too dim, not blinding. New York has that curved "New York State" text under UV plus some little stars, and it tends to be a bit more intricate. I've noticed some reps struggle to get the orange hue right on CA, sometimes it looks more yellow or greenish. If you're in a place that uses UV (most high-end clubs do), make sure your card's UV is clean and the color matches what you see in reference images. Out-of-state helps because the bouncer might not know exactly what CA's UV should look like, but if it's obviously wrong colors, that's a red flag.

OVI color-shifting is probably the toughest to perfect. Real CA IDs have that little bear and the "21" badge that shift from gold to green as you tilt the card. New York's OVI is on the state seal and the "NYS" text. I've had cards where the shift was barely visible or the colors didn't change smoothly—they'd just go from shiny to matte. If you can get that shift clean, it does a lot of heavy lifting. A buddy of mine had a New York ID with solid OVI and used it in California without any problems. But honestly, the bear on CA is more iconic and easier for a bouncer to spot if it's missing entirely.

Card material feel is something you can't really fake with just a quick glance. Real CA cards have a slightly matte finish, not glossy, and they're fairly rigid with a bit of flex. New York cards feel similar but maybe a touch thinner and more plasticky. I've handled both legit and rep versions, and the rep CA cards sometimes feel too flimsy or have that cheap laminated texture. A good rep will use PVC with a matte overlay that matches the real thing pretty closely. Out-of-state helps here too because the bouncer might not handle many CA or NY cards daily, so the weight and texture won't trigger an alarm unless it's obviously off.

So overall, I'd give the out-of-state strategy a solid 9/10 for ease of use, assuming your card is well-made in the areas I mentioned. A CA ID on the east coast is my go-to recommendation because it's common enough to be plausible but not so common that every bouncer knows it inside out. NY is a close second, but I've found that NY cards get a bit more scrutiny since so many people fake them. Stick with CA if you can, focus on getting the UV and OVI right, and you'll be golden.

I use a CA in Boston and never had issues. Just have a story ready about why you are there - college, visiting family, work trip, etc.

Agreed on avoiding NY. Go CA - the new template looks clean and most east coast places do not see it often enough to spot fakes easily.
