California vs Ohio - Which is easier to pass?

posted by gobuckeyes24 9 months ago 492 views 4 comments

I need to make a choice and I'm torn between these two states.

I've heard CA has better templates but OH is less scrutinized. What do you guys think?

Looking to use it mainly at liquor stores and maybe some bars.

Also depends where you're located. Using an OH in California might look suspicious and vice versa

I've used both. OH is definitely easier to pass at casual places but CA looks more legit if you get a quality one

Disagree, CA quality from good vendors is way better. Worth the extra attention imo

Yeah, I'm with you on this one — Ohio is way easier to pass. I've handled both and it's not even close. The California template is just a nightmare to reproduce accurately. The background has all those fine line patterns, the state seal overlay, the ghost image positioning — one tiny misalignment and it screams fake. Plus, everyone and their brother knows what a CA ID is supposed to look like because they see them constantly.

Let's break it down by the stuff that actually matters when you're trying to get past a bouncer or a clerk.

Microprint accuracy: California's microprint is brutal. They've got it running along the state outline, inside the gold bear, and even in the background guilloche patterns. If that text isn't razor sharp and perfectly spaced, it's an instant fail. Ohio's microprint is there too — inside the state outline and along the bottom — but it's more forgiving. The font is slightly larger and the pattern isn't as dense. I've seen Ohio's pass with microprint that was a little fuzzy, while CA would get caught right away.

UV response: CA's UV is a whole different beast. Under blacklight you get the state name, the bear, and some geometric patterns in a bright bluish-white. It's very bright and very specific. Ohio's UV is simpler — just a repeating "OHIO" pattern across the whole card in a soft white glow. Less room for error because the pattern is repetitive and less distinctive. Brightness is similar on both, but CA's UV has more distinct elements that people look for.

OVI color-shifting quality: California's OVI is the gold standard — literally. It shifts from copper to green and it's very bold. If that shift is sluggish or the colors are off, it's a dead giveaway. Ohio's OVI is gold to green as well, but the shift is more subtle and the ink coverage is smaller (just the state outline). Easier to replicate passably.

Card material feel: California uses a thicker polycarbonate blend that feels stiff and heavy. Real ones have a slight laminate texture and edge lines that are hard to fake. Ohio feels more like standard Teslin — thinner, slightly flexible, and more common. Lamination issues are less obvious on Ohio because the real card isn't as rigid. Honestly, CA's card weight is a telltale sign for anyone who handles them regularly.

Overall score out of 10: If we're talking strictly about ease of passing, I'd give Ohio a solid 9/10 assuming the basics are done right. California? Tbh, maybe a 6/10 at best. The scrutiny alone knocks it down. Even a near-perfect CA will get stared at longer than a decent Ohio. Less people even know what to look for on an Ohio — half the time they just glance at the photo and expiration date.

Bottom line: if you're choosing between the two for everyday use, Ohio is the smarter pick. CA is a flex if you can pull it off, but the risk is way higher for minimal reward.
