Delaware - seriously overlooked state pick

DE gets zero attention but it is genuinely excellent. Small state means fewer bouncers have extensive knowledge of what it should look like. Template is clean. Works well throughout the mid-Atlantic region.

Mid-Atlantic use with a DE prop is a great combo. Plausible and low scrutiny.

I’ve been running DE for a while now and honestly it’s become my absolute go-to. People sleep on Delaware because it’s small and nobody thinks to look twice, but that’s exactly why it works. Most staff at bars, clubs, and even liquor stores have never seen a real one up close, let alone memorized the security features. So here’s why this card punches way above its weight.

Microprint accuracy – Delaware has microprint running through the state outline and along the left border. On a good copy it’s sharp enough to read under a loop, but a lot of fakes mess this up because the text is ridiculously small. The real deal uses “DELAWARE” repeated in a tiny font, and if your printer can handle it the effect is convincing. I’ve had bouncers squint at it and then just move on because they don’t even know to check for microprint. That said, if you’re using a lower-end setup the lines can blur, so you’ve gotta pay attention to your resolution settings. I’d give it a 4/5 on microprint – the text is there, but sometimes it’s a little thicker than genuine.

UV light response – This is where DE really shines. Under a standard blacklight the entire state outline glows a bright neon green – not the weak pastel you see on some other states. The brightness is honestly kind of jarring compared to surrounding elements. The “Delaware” text at the top also lights up but in a slightly different shade, almost lime green. I’ve tested this at a few spots with a cheap UV pen light and it pops immediately. No slow fade, no patchiness. If your UV layer is off even a little it’s a dead giveaway, so make sure you’re using the right ink or overlay. Honestly this is one of the best UV responses I’ve seen. 5/5.

OVI color-shifting quality – Delaware uses a color-shifting ink on the state seal in the bottom right corner and on the “21” overlay for the over-21 vertical cards. When you tilt it, the seal shifts from gold to a coppery green. The shift is smooth and has that metallic sheen, not a dull matte transition. On a high-end build it looks legit, but cheaper attempts just don’t catch the light the same way. I’ve had a couple bouncers angle the card back and forth and then hand it back without comment. The “21” also shifts and is printed over the photo, which is tricky to replicate cleanly. I’d say 4/5 – it’s good but not perfect if you hold it right next to a genuine one.

Card material feel – Delaware uses a polycarbonate blend so the card is rigid but still has a slight flex. It passes the snap test no problem – you can bend it just a little and it springs back. The surface is smooth with a matte finish, not glossy like some other states. The edges are clean and the lamination doesn’t peel. When you hand it over it feels substantial, not flimsy. I’ve compared it side by side with a friend’s real DE and the thickness is spot on, maybe 30 mil. That alone has saved me more times than I can count. 5/5.

Overall score: 9/10. The only reason it’s not a 10 is that microprint could be slightly sharper on some batches, and the OVI sometimes looks a hair too reflective under direct light. But for a sleeper state that almost nobody trains on, DE is seriously underrated. If you’re looking for a reliable card that won’t get over-analyzed, this is the one. Staff just don’t know what to look for, and even when they do the features hold up well. Give it a shot.

Know Newark, Wilmington, Dover basics. That covers most geography questions.

Small state IDs are genuinely underrated for exactly this reason.
