Working the door at a busy venue, you see a lot of Utah cards, and they require a specific inspection routine. Utah IDs have some key security features that are hard to replicate, and bouncers are trained to check them. Knowing what door staff look for can help you identify a quality card. I always check the card flexibility first.
Laser Perforated Beehive Check
The first check bouncers do is holding the card up to a light source. Utah cards have a laser-perforated beehive design near the center. The holes of the beehive should be clean and let light pass through easily. On cheap replicas, this perforation is often missing or the holes are messy and melted. The shape of the beehive should be recognizable and aligned with the background graphics. If the perforation looks punched with a pin, it fails instantly.
Optically Variable Hologram Shift
Next, we tilt the card under our flashlights. The hologram overlay should shift colors from gold to green as you rotate the card. The shift should be bright and not look dull. We also run a thumb over the signature line. The signature must feel slightly raised due to the laser engraving. If the signature feels flat or printed, it's a major red flag. The card rigidity is also tested; it should snap back quickly when bent. The edges should feel solid and not split.
The barcode on the back is checked as well, as scanning apps will flag incorrect data formats. Utah cards have a matte finish that bouncers look for. Knowing these door checks is useful for verifying card quality in hand. I always take a few extra seconds to inspect the ghost photo alignment under my LED light.
