Florida vs Georgia - which is smarter for southeast use?
Man, this is a solid debate for anyone trying to stay low-key in the Southeast. I've messed around with both templates enough to have some pretty strong opinions, so I'll break it down for you based on what actually matters for passing a casual glance or a more thorough check.
Georgia is honestly the smarter play if you're not trying to overthink it. The template's pretty stripped down – less going on means fewer points of failure. The microprint on GA is usually a single line of text that's pretty forgiving if it's slightly off, whereas you start getting into trouble when they try to cram in all the fancy details. The UV response on a decent GA is typically a simple state outline or seal – nothing too crazy, just a solid, consistent glow without any weird color shifts. You're looking at a standard blue or yellow-ish tone, nothing that screams fake. The OVI on GA is almost nonexistent on most versions, so you don't have to worry about color-shifting being too obvious. The card material itself feels like your typical PVC, maybe a little on the thin side in some batches, but it flexes okay. Overall, I'd give a well-made GA a solid 7.5/10 – it's reliable precisely because it's boring.
Florida, on the other hand, is a whole different beast. It's a high-complexity template with a ton of little details that can absolutely trip you up if they're not perfect. The microprint on FL is brutal – there are multiple small text elements scattered around (like the fine print near the ghost image) that need to be crisp and properly spaced. One wrong font weight or a slightly off alignment and it's noticeable. The UV on FL is way more intricate – you've got overlapping designs, multiple colors, and a lot of brightness variation. If the UV is too muted or too washed out, it'll look off under a blacklight. The OVI is where FL really makes or breaks it – the state seal and the "FL" overlay should shift from a deep gold-green to a bright copper, and that color shift needs to be smooth, not choppy. The card material for FL is also trickier – it's supposed to be a bit stiffer than GA, with a slight polycarbonate feel, but a lot of batches end up too plasticky or too flimsy. Because of all that complexity, even a good FL copy rarely hits above a 6.5/10 in my book – the risk of a small flaw standing out is just higher.
So for southeast use, if you're staying local and want to avoid unnecessary attention, Georgia is the smarter choice. It's simpler, it's less likely to have a glaring tell, and the average bouncer or cashier isn't going to scrutinize it as hard. Florida might look "cooler" with all the security features, but that cuts both ways – more features means more things that can be off. Unless you've got a top-tier version that nails every detail, go with GA for peace of mind.
FL is more recognizable so bouncers might scrutinize it more carefully.
Used GA in Charlotte with zero issues. Good middle ground choice.
Both are solid but I lean GA for southeast use specifically.
Living in the Carolinas and deciding between FL and GA for my novelty piece. Both are common enough in this area that neither would stand out. Looking for recent quality comparisons on both templates.
