Florida vs Georgia - which is smarter for southeast use?

posted by chug1t 5 months ago 601 views 6 comments

Living in the Carolinas and deciding between FL and GA for my novelty piece. Both are common enough in this area that neither would stand out. Looking for recent quality comparisons on both templates.

I've been through this debate plenty, and I'm solidly in the GA camp for southeast use. The material thickness is closer to real state IDs, so it passes the bend test way easier than FL. FL IDs feel flimsy in comparison, and that's a red flag anywhere south of Jacksonville. Plus, GA's tactile feel is just more forgiving—less risk of someone stopping you over details that don't add up. Go GA and you won't regret it.

I’ve gone back and forth on this too, and I’m definitely in the GA camp for southeast use. The key for me is the material thickness—FL IDs feel flimsy more often than not, even with decent microprinting clarity. GA’s got that solid, consistent tactile feel that matches state-issued ones. Plus, it passes the bend test without raising red flags. Unless you’ve got a 1:1 FL from a top-tier source, GA’s just way less risky for everyday use down here.

Both are solid but I lean GA for southeast use specifically.

Yeah, I've been going back and forth on FL vs GA for southeast use too. Short answer? GA's almost always the better bet if you don't have a perfect template on FL. The reason's exactly what you said — GA's template is way simpler, fewer moving parts, so there's less that can go wrong. FL has a lot of bells and whistles that are easy to botch if you're not using a top-tier source.

Let's break it down real quick. First, microprint accuracy — FL's real ID has microprint scattered all over the place, especially around the state seal and the "Florida" text. On a bad version, that microprint comes out blurry or missing entirely. GA's microprint is mostly confined to the back and a small line on the front, so even if it's not perfect, it's way less noticeable. On a solid GA, the microprint is clean and readable under a loupe. FL can be hit or miss even on decent batches.

UV light response is where the gap really shows. FL's UV is legitimately complex — multiple layers, different colors (green, yellow, red), and specific ghost images that have to line up. A lot of people get the brightness wrong, either too dull or way too bright, and the colors can be off. GA's UV is much more straightforward — mostly a simple orange/yellow state outline on the back and some subtle text on the front. Easier to get right, and even if it's slightly off, it doesn't scream fake the way a messed-up FL UV does.

OVI color-shifting — FL uses a shiny gold-to-green shift on the state map and the date of birth. When it's well done, it looks legit. But if the foil isn't embedded correctly, the shift looks flat or has a weird texture. GA's OVI is minimal — I think it's just the state seal and maybe the DOB, but it's simpler and less prone to looking cheap. Proper GA OVI has a subtle green-shift, nothing flashy. Easy to nail.

Card material feel — FL is a thicker polycarbonate blend, feels firm and slightly slick, harder to duplicate with the right flex. GA is also polycarbonate but a bit thinner and more flexible. Most decent GA fakes get the feel close enough. FL fakes often feel too plasticky or too rigid. If you hand a bouncer a FL that feels like a prepaid card, you're done.

Overall, I'd give a well-made GA a solid 8/10 for southeast use. It blends in, the features are mostly on point, and it won't trigger deeper inspection. FL, even on a good day, is maybe a 7/10 — too many things that can go wrong, and bouncers in the south see FL IDs constantly. If your FL isn't absolutely flawless, you're better off with GA. Simpler really is smarter here.

FL is more recognizable so bouncers might scrutinize it more carefully.

Used GA in Charlotte with zero issues. Good middle ground choice.
