How to check Illinois security features

posted by uptohere 2 months ago 460 views 1 comments

Illinois updated its driver's license design a few years back and the current version has several features worth knowing before inspecting a novelty card. Here is what I check, in order of reliability.

Verify the Format First

The current Illinois DL uses a vertical format. If a vendor sent you a horizontal Illinois card, stop there — it's wrong before you look at anything else. The vertical layout has been standard since the redesign and all reputable vendors have updated their templates. A horizontal IL card is an immediate red flag.

Holographic Overlay

Illinois uses an OVD that covers the photo zone and extends into the personal data area. The overlay displays the state name and a repeating pattern that color-shifts as you tilt the card. What to look for: the color transition should be smooth and continuous across the entire overlay surface. Any patchiness, seam lines, or zones where the shift stops are signs of lower-quality holographic film. Genuine IL cards show a consistent shift from edge to edge of the OVD element.

UV Layer

Under a 365nm UV light, Illinois cards display a background fluorescent pattern that covers most of the card face at consistent density. To check a novelty card: hold it under the light in a dark room and look for even glow with no dark patches or irregular zones. Incomplete UV coverage is the most common production shortcut on Illinois templates — vendors sometimes apply UV ink only to the most visible zone and skip secondary areas.

Microprint Inspection

Genuine Illinois DLs have microprinting in several locations including along the bottom card edge and around the photo border. Without specialized equipment, use a smartphone camera with optical zoom — most phones can resolve whether the microtext is actually legible or just a printed blur. Legible microtext indicates a higher-resolution print process; a blurry line where the microtext should be is a quick quality indicator.

Data Field Texture

The personal data fields on genuine Illinois DLs use laser engraving, which creates a texture you can feel with a fingertip. Cross the name and date of birth fields with a fingernail and you should feel the slight resistance of engraved recesses. Vendor cards using inkjet or thermal printing in these zones produce a completely flat surface with no tactile depth at all.

Finally, the PDF417 barcode should decode to complete AAMVA fields on any reader app. A card that returns partial data or fails to decode has a barcode issue regardless of how the front looks.

Best thing is to grab a real IL and compare side by side if you can. Check the microprinting on the front — phony ones always look smeared or blurry compared to the real deal. Material thickness matters too, a lot of fakes feel too flimsy once you handle them. Give it a light bend test and see how it holds up. Honestly if it doesn't feel right in your hands, that's usually your first clue.
