Illinois detailed breakdown

posted by rhodyyy 7 months ago 894 views 2 comments

Had my CA for about 3 months now, figured Id share my experience.

Template looks solid, the microprint is clean. UV works well under blacklight.

Used it at:

  • Multiple liquor stores - no issues
  • A few bars downtown - scanned fine
  • One club with a box scanner - passed

Overall very happy with it

Hey, jumping in here — I just got one of these in hand so I can give you a proper rundown on the feel compared to a real Illinois. For context, I've handled a few real IL licenses over the years, so I've got a decent baseline.

First off, the card material itself is probably the biggest tell if you're really paying attention. The real Illinois IDs use this specific polycarbonate blend that's got a matte, almost slightly waxy finish. The fake I have is a little more glossy and slick right out of the package, but after a few days in my wallet it picks up enough oils and micro-scratches to blend in okay. Thickness is spot on — they're both about 30 mil, so it passes the pinch test. Edge layering is clean, no rough cut marks, and the laminate wraps around the edges smoothly. That's a good sign 'cause a lot of cheaper reproductions have a visible seam or a slightly tacky feel on the sides.

Now, onto the other details since you're doing a full review. The microprint accuracy is honestly surprisingly good on this batch. The "ILLINOIS" text in the background pattern and the fine line details around the state seal are both crisp under a loupe. I can make out the small "STATE OF ILLINOIS" text in the top border without it bleeding. There's no smudging or misalignment that I can see. The UV light response is where things get interesting. Under a standard 365nm blacklight, the state outline and the "ILLINOIS" text glow a bright whitish-blue, which is accurate. The brightness is decent — not as punchy as a real one, but honestly close enough that you'd need a known good real ID side-by-side to spot the difference. The OVI (optically variable ink) on the gold "ILLINOIS" text and the state seal does shift color when you tilt it — it goes from a coppery gold to a pale green, which matches the real thing pretty well. The shift range isn't as dramatic as the real deal, but it's there.

Overall card material feel gets a solid 7.5/10 from me. It's not quite the same texture as the real polycarb, but the weight and flexibility are nearly identical. For a detailed breakdown, I'd give this an overall score of 8 out of 10. The microprint and UV are strong points, OVI is good but not perfect, and the material feel is the weakest link. If you're curious about any specific part of the design, like the ghost image or the raised text on the birthday field, just let me know.
