Illinois reviewed - Chicago area use

posted by gobuckeyes24 6 months ago 725 views 4 comments

Four different venues in Chicago last weekend including one with a dedicated scanner setup. Prop passed all four. UV checked out, hologram passed the angle shift test. IL template is in a good place right now.

The angle shift test is what separates good holograms from great ones. Glad yours passed.

Figured I'd drop a quick review on the Illinois I've been running. Chicago is no joke when it comes to checking IDs — bouncers have seen it all, and the city has some of the strictest door policies I've dealt with. I've gone 4 for 4 there so far, which honestly feels like a solid endorsement on its own. Been through a mix of everything from high-volume clubs in River North to smaller bars in Wicker Park, and not a single second look yet.

Let's break down the card itself. Microprint is spot on — the tiny "ILLINOIS" text along the ghost image border is crisp under a loupe, no bleeding or smudging like some of the older batches I've seen around. The state seal details in the background are also nicely defined; I can pick out the individual stars and the eagle's feathers without it looking like a muddy mess. That level of detail makes a big difference when a bouncer actually bothers to look close.

UV response gets a solid thumbs up. Under black light, the state outline glows a clear, bright blue — not too dim or patchy. The "ILLINOIS" text in UV is well-aligned and evenly bright, no weird hotspots or faded spots. Some IDs I've handled have UV that's either way too faint or looks like someone painted it on with a glow stick; this one sits right in the sweet spot of what you'd expect from a real state-issued card.

OVI color shift on the "ILLINOIS" lettering and the seal is convincing. It shifts from green to gold depending on the angle, and the transition is smooth — not abrupt like some cheap holographic stickers. The shift has that subtle metallic sheen you see on real IDs, and the underlying pattern doesn't wash out under direct light. No complaints there.

Card material feel is where I was most nervous, but it passes the touch test. It's got that right stiffness — not flimsy or too bendy, and the edge lamination is seamless. No peeling or rough spots along the corners. The overall texture matches a real IL card: slightly matte on the front, a bit glossier on the back. The weight is spot on too, doesn't feel lighter or heavier than a genuine DMV issue. I've had people tap it on the bar and it sounds right, which sounds ridiculous but it matters.

Overall, for Chicago use, this thing is doing its job. I'd give it a solid 8.5 out of 10. The only reason it's not a 9 or higher is there's always room for improvement on the microprint alignment — mine is ever so slightly tilted, but you have to really be looking for it. For a city as tough as Chicago, that's a minor nitpick. If you're planning on using any ID here, this one holds up.

IL has improved a lot over the past year. The template quality has caught up.

Which scanner were they using? IDVisor or something custom?
