Illinois vs Wisconsin - which is better?

Yeah, you've got the right idea. Illinois is one of those states that's been hammered so hard by fakes that any halfway decent bouncer in the Midwest can spot the tells from across the bar. Wisconsin, though? Flies under the radar way more often. I've had both in hand over the years, and there's a real difference in how they hold up to scrutiny.

So for Illinois, the microprint on the back is a huge pain point. The real ID has tiny text around the Lincoln bust and on the ghost image that's nearly impossible to replicate cleanly. Most IL fakes I've seen either skip it entirely or end up with blurry, smudged letters. Under UV light, the real deal has this consistent blue overlay with a faint red seal near the top right. And brightness matters — bootleg UV tends to be either too dim or has this weird purple tint instead of the proper blue. The OVI on the state seal is supposed to shift from gold to green, but a lot of cheaper prints just use a metallic foil that doesn't change color at all. Card feel's another dead giveaway: real IL cards are Teslin, so they've got a slightly rubbery, matte finish. Fakes often come on thick PVC that feels slick and plasticky. Because of all that and how common they are, I'd give IL maybe a 5 out of 10 for risk. It works in a pinch, but you're one bouncer who's seen a few too many bad ILs away from a denial.

Wisconsin's a different story. Microprint is still there — around the cream city brick illustration on the front — but since WI isn't faked nearly as often, most bouncers don't really know where to look. UV on the real WI is a distinct orange-yellow glow across the whole card, bright but not overpowering. Fakes tend to get the color close enough to pass unless someone specifically checks with a blacklight. OVI is probably the trickiest part: the real WI has a color-shifting seal that goes from gold to green, and even good fakes sometimes mess up the shift or use a static gold ink. Still, most club staff don't lean in and tilt the card to check. The material feel is closer to a standard PVC card, which actually works in your favor — a lot of fakes feel about the same as the real thing. Overall, I'd put Wisconsin at a solid 7 or 8 out of 10. Not perfect, but definitely the safer bet if you want to avoid second glances.

The main trade-off is location. If you're actually in Illinois, a Wisconsin ID might look weird just because of the out-of-state thing — especially if you're young and not clearly a college student from across the border. But if you're in a neutral spot where both are plausible, go with Wisconsin. IL is just too burned, honestly.
