Indiana hologram layers — inspection notes

Indiana driver's licenses use a multi-layer holographic design that is more complex than what many states use. Spent time comparing a vendor card against a genuine Indiana license with a systematic angle test. Here are the findings.

The Indiana hologram structure

Indiana's current license generation uses a full-card OVD overlay with a distinctive design featuring the state outline, the Indiana state motto element, and a repeating pattern that shifts independently as the card tilts. The design has at least two distinct visual layers that are apparent at different angles — one that is most visible when the card is nearly flat, and another that comes forward when the card is at about 20 to 30 degrees of tilt.

On a genuine Indiana license, tilting slowly from flat to steep produces a smooth visual transition through these layers. The layers appear to have depth — the inner pattern seems to float above or below the outer pattern depending on the angle, creating a three-dimensional effect that is characteristic of a high-quality embossed OVD.

Vendor card comparison

The vendor card I examined had both visual layers present and correctly positioned within the overlay area. The color transitions were mostly accurate — the warm gold-to-green shift that genuine Indiana licenses show was present. The main difference I could identify was in the smoothness of the layered depth effect: on the genuine card the layers have a clear perceived separation, while on the vendor card the same motion produced a flatter effect with less apparent depth between layers.

This difference is subtle and requires direct comparison to notice. Viewing the vendor card alone without a genuine reference, the hologram looks correct and color-shifting.

Practical conclusion

For standard venue verification, the vendor hologram is sufficient — presence, correct position, and color shift are all there. For a side-by-side collector comparison against a genuine card, the layer depth difference is detectable. Indiana is a state with a more demanding hologram specification than average, and quality vendors show it.
