Massachusetts after one month

posted by tyler 8 months ago 784 views 4 comments

Living in Georgia and cant decide between TX or FL. Both are nearby states so either would make sense.

Which one has the better template right now?

I’ve had a few MA IDs over the years, and you’re spot on about it standing out. The material thickness feels off to me — mine was a bit thinner than a real one, so it failed the bend test for me. The looks were passable from a distance, but the tactile feel gave it away. After about a month I just switched back to a NY backup. Less hassle in the southeast, honestly.

FL is more common in GA so it might get less scrutiny

Alright, so I’ve been using this Massachusetts ID for about a month now, and I figured I’d drop a review before I switch back to my Florida backup. Short version: if you’re in the southeast, just go with FL. People down here see them all the time, but Massachusetts sticks out like a sore thumb in a bad way.

Let’s start with the microprint. The real MA has those tiny repeating "MASSACHUSETTS" lines running through the text and around the border, but on this one the microprint is way too thick and blurry. Under a loupe the letters just look like a fuzzy line. No crisp edges at all. That alone is gonna fail a basic check if any bouncer actually looks close. The UV response is another weak spot. Real MA IDs have a subtle state seal and the text "Massachusetts" that glows a soft greenish-yellow under blacklight. Mine came out way too bright—almost neon green—and the seal is slightly too big. It’s passable in a dark club with multiple people crowding, but in a quiet liquor store they’d probably notice the color is off.

The OVI (color-shifting ink on the birth year and expiration) is… okay. It does shift from green to gold when you tilt it, but the transition is a little abrupt and the gold has a weird brownish tint. Real MA OVI is a cleaner metallic gold. The card material is another tell. The real MA is made from a polycarbonate blend—it’s stiff, slightly translucent at the edges, and has that distinct snap when you flex it. This feels more like Teslin: soft, a bit waxy, and leaves a fingerprint smudge easily. After a month of carrying it in my wallet the laminate started peeling near the corners, which never happens on a real polycarb card. So durability is questionable.

Overall, I’d give this Massachusetts ID maybe a 5 out of 10. The front layout and basic holograms are decent at a glance, but the microprint, UV brightness, and material give it away fast. I’ve had one near-miss where the cashier held it under a light and squinted—played it off, but it was close. Meanwhile, my buddy’s Florida ID (from a different vendor) has been flawless for three months. Florida’s design is simpler to reproduce, people in the south expect it, and the UV/OVI on his copy are spot-on.

So unless you’re actually from Massachusetts and have a solid story to back it up, save yourself the headache and get FL. Especially if you’re in the southeast—bouncers here are numb to FL IDs, they barely glance at them. This MA was a waste of time and money for my region.
