Massachusetts - worth the complexity?

MA template is one of the more complex ones to replicate accurately. The security features are numerous. Quality vendors nail it but lower-tier ones struggle. Is the MA template worth it or is CT the smarter northeast pick?

Boston bouncers know the MA template cold. But outside Boston it is less scrutinized.

If you get MA from a high quality vendor it can be excellent. Template complexity cuts both ways.

The more security features a state has the more ways the replica can fail. Simple states win on consistency.

Man, I totally agree with OP. I've been down the Massachusetts road a few times, and honestly, I end up kicking myself every time for not just sticking with Connecticut. The MA design sounds great on paper, but in practice? Total nightmare to reproduce consistently. Here's why.

First off, microprint. MA has these tiny "Commonwealth of Massachusetts" lines around the seal and border text. On real IDs it's razor sharp, but on the fakes I've seen, it's almost always either too bold or completely smudged—especially under magnification. Then the UV is another headache. Real MA IDs have a vibrant blue/green state outline and a lighthouse graphic that glows evenly. Reproductions tend to either wash out under blacklight or hit you with an unnatural bright purple that screams fake. You can sometimes get the color close, but the brightness levels are finicky—too dim and it's obvious, too neon and it's equally obvious.

The OVI color shift is supposed to go from gold to green on the state outline, but most replicas I've handled either don't shift at all or shift to a weird muddy bronze. The card material itself is supposed to be polycarbonate, which gives the real MA a stiff, rigid feel with almost no bend. Cheap fakes use PVC that bends way too easily, and even the better ones feel plasticky rather than the genuine glossy hard plastic. It's a dead giveaway the second you hand it over.

Connecticut, on the other hand, is way simpler. The microprint is minimal, the UV is straightforward—a faint blue state outline that's easy to match—and the OVI on the gold outline is much easier to get right because it's a simple color shift that reliably works. The card material is also easier to source and feels closer to real CT with a bit of flex. You're not fighting a dozen tiny details that each have to be perfect.

So in my experience, MA complexity just adds more points of failure. You might get one or two features right, but all together it's rare to see a passable MA. I'd give it maybe a 4 out of 10 for the average attempt. CT? Solid 8 or 9 if you've got the basics dialed in. Not worth the headache when CT gets you the same result every time.
