Microprinting lines on Virginia ID
Agreed on the microprinting clarity being the real tell — you really need a loupe to judge it fairly. On the flex thing, mine feels a touch flimsy compared to other states, but that's just how VA stock is. It passed the bend test fine and the tactile feel on the seal is there, so I'm not sweating it. Material thickness alone isn't worth failing something over imo.
Yeah microprinting clarity is honestly the giveaway for me too. If those lines smear under a loupe it's over. On thickness I actually think VA feels a bit flimsier than people expect, so passing the bend test doesn't mean much by itself — mine flexes pretty easy and it's fine. I always go by the seal texture first from the frisking in, then just look at the spacing on the numbers/pseudorandom font density. Physical aesthetics basically win now; some scanned outputs look great and felt physically OK on the set checks I've run into.
Microprinting on the VA is one of the trickier bits to nail since the lines are so fine. If yours stays legible without inking together, that's a good sign. I'd also check the tactile feel on the front seal — should have a slight raised texture you can catch with a fingernail. Material thickness matters too; VA stock isn't super rigid, so don't judge it too harsh on flex alone.
I wanted to share my findings after inspecting the microprint text on the latest Virginia card template. Microprinting is one of the hardest features for vendors to replicate because standard inkjet or low-resolution card printers cannot achieve the required detail. Under a 30x jeweler's loupe, the text lines on this card are highly legible.
Virginia Microprint Locations
On this card, the tiny text is located along the bottom edge of the primary portrait and surrounding the state seal graphic. If you look closely with magnification, you can read the tiny letters clearly. The print is sharp, and there is no ink bleeding or filling between the letters. On lesser quality cards, this text turns into a solid, messy line of ink that looks fake under close inspection. I spent half an hour checking the entire border under bright LED lighting.
Checking Print Resolution
The color registers on the background patterns are also aligned properly. If the cyan and magenta passes are misaligned, the microprinting will look blurry or double-printed. On this card, the alignment is spot-on. I also ran a UV test, and the security lines glow cleanly under a blacklight. The card feels solid and behaves like a genuine polycarbonate piece when handled. The red and gold color registers around the seal are aligned perfectly.
The signature is printed cleanly, and the laser engraving doesn't have any burn marks. I received this batch on September 15, and the print resolution stands out compared to previous versions I have reviewed. It's a solid card to add to a novelty collection. I will check how the ink holds up to rubbing alcohol next.
