Minnesota - great for upper midwest use
The laser perforation detail is something most people do not check for but should.
Twin Cities venues can be thorough. Good to have a positive report from there.
I've been sitting on this one for a while, and honestly, MN is a seriously underrated pick for the upper midwest. It doesn't get nearly as much hype as some of the other midwest states, but tbh, it's a solid all-arounder that handles regional use really well. Anyway, I've had it in hand for a few weeks now, so here are my thoughts.
The overall material feel is spot-on. Real MN IDs use a relatively stiff polycarbonate with a slightly matte finish, and this one nails it. It's not too plasticky or flimsy—it has that slight flexibility without feeling cheap. The thickness is pretty much identical to the real thing, which matters a lot when you're sliding it across a bar top or handing it to a cashier. No one's going to bend it and think twice.
Microprint accuracy is where this thing really shines. Along the vertical border and inside the state seal, it's sharp and legible under a loupe. I've seen some versions where the text gets a little mushy, but on this batch it's crisp. The fine line patterns around the "Minnesota" header and the state outline are clean too – no breaks or blurring that would scream "fake" on a closer look. Real MN microprint says "State of Minnesota" repeated in tiny text, and that holds up here.
The UV response is solid but not perfect. Under a standard blacklight, the state outline glows a nice even blue – not too bright, not too dim. The large "MN" letters near the photo come through clearly, and there's a subtle pattern in the background that matches the real deal. Color consistency is good; it doesn't have that weird washed-out or overly neon look some fakes get. Brightness is maybe a hair under the genuine article, but you'd need a side-by-side comparison to notice. Honestly, for a quick scan at a liquor store or a gas station, it's going to pass without raising eyebrows.
The OVI color-shifting element is handled well. On the real MN ID, the "Minnesota" text in the upper left shifts from green to copper/gold depending on the angle. This reproduction does the same – the color change is smooth and not too abrupt. The shift range is believable, and the ink has that subtle metallic sheen. I've seen OVI that's way too glittery or that flips colors at the wrong angles, but this one's got the right behavior. It's not flawless – if you really tilt it hard under direct light you can see a tiny bit of splotchiness – but in normal use it's convincing.
Overall, this is a great choice if you're in MN, WI, IA, or the Dakotas. It blends in perfectly and the attention to detail is above average for a state that doesn't get a ton of love. I'd give it a solid 8.5/10. Could be a 9 if the UV brightness was dialed in a little more, but for the price and the region-specific utility, it's a no-brainer.
MN prop has been solid. Used it across the Twin Cities without any issues. Template is clean, barcode encodes correctly, and the laser-perforated detail that some venues check for is present.
