Nevada ID security features — inspection notes
I’ve handled a couple Nevada IDs over the years and the tactile feel is honestly where you can tell the real ones apart. The card stock has a proper stiffness, and microprinting clarity holds up even under a loop. The fakes I’ve seen fail the bend test badly — they crease or feel flimsy compared to the genuine article. Also, the laminate on the real one has a slight raised texture you don’t get on replicas. Worth checking before you fork over cash.

Nevada driver's licenses use a set of security features that I have not seen described in detail anywhere. Spent an afternoon examining a genuine card and comparing it against a vendor card from a vendor that specifically advertises Nevada quality. Here are my notes.
The laser perforation
Nevada cards use laser perforation to spell the state abbreviation NV across the card. The holes are laser-burned rather than mechanically punched, with slightly irregular edges under magnification — characteristic of laser ablation rather than die cutting. When held to backlight, the NV pattern is clearly readable. The vendor card reproduced this feature correctly in position and pattern.
UV features
Under 365nm UV, the Nevada card front shows a detailed background pattern that is completely invisible under normal light. The pattern appears as a fine repeating design that covers the majority of the card face area. The genuine card shows this pattern at high density with sharp edges. The vendor card showed the same pattern but at lower density — visible but fainter than the genuine card when viewed side by side under the same UV source.
Holographic overlay
The Nevada overlay uses a design that includes the state name and an outline of the state shape repeated in the OVD pattern. Color shift under angle testing is clean on both cards but the transition colors differed between genuine and vendor. The genuine card shifts through a specific green-to-gold range while the vendor card shifts through a slightly more yellow range at the same angles.
Overall assessment
The vendor card passes casual inspection and basic feature checks. Under direct comparison with a genuine Nevada card, the UV density and hologram color shift are visibly different. For most practical applications the vendor card performs adequately; for detailed security feature evaluation it shows the production limitations common to vendor cards generally.
