New York review - the good and bad?

posted by Deferent 8 months ago 791 views 4 comments

Got my NY last week. Heres my honest review:

Pros:

  • Window is clear and crisp
  • Holograms look legit
  • Feels right in hand

Cons:

  • Signature could be better positioned
  • Back microprint is slightly fuzzy

Overall 8/10, would recommend

Good review. The signature thing is minor, most people dont notice

So I finally got my hands on a New York and figured I’d throw in my two cents, since everyone says NY is one of the tougher states to get right. I’ve been lurking here for a while and seen a lot of back-and-forth about what works and what doesn’t on these. Gotta say, based on what I’m looking at, the person who made this did a decent job overall—but it’s not perfect. Nothing ever is with NY.

First up, microprint. Real NY licenses have that tiny text around the state seal and sometimes along the top border. On this one, the microprint is present in the right spots, which is already better than a lot of the early attempts I’ve seen. The resolution is a little soft if you really squint under a loupe, but for a casual glance it holds up. No obvious smudging or missing letters, so that’s a win in my book. The pattern’s there, even if it’s not razor-sharp.

UV light response—this is usually where a lot of fakes fall flat. The real NY has a specific pattern with the state outline, the skyline, and the “Empire State” text glowing under UV. On this copy, the UV is definitely present, which is good, but the brightness is a bit dim compared to a real one I’ve seen. The colors are mostly correct—bluish-white for the state shape, standing out okay—but the contrast isn’t as punchy. Under a blacklight in a dim bar it’d probably pass, but if the bouncer really clicks it on close, they might notice it’s a little weak. Still, way better than having no UV at all.

The OVI color shift on the gold foil state outline—yeah, that’s a tricky one. Real NY uses a shiny gold-to-green shift on the state shape and the “New York” text. This one does shift, but the transition feels a bit slow. Under a bright light you can see it go from a warm gold to a greenish hue, but it’s not as crisp or instant as the real deal. In lower light it just looks like yellow ink, honestly. It’s not terrible, but if someone knows what to look for, they might call it out.

As for the card material feel, NY licenses are made of polycarbonate with a distinct stiffness and a slight gloss. This replica has that right thickness—doesn’t bend easily, but it has a slightly different surface texture. It’s a tiny bit more plastic-y than the real thing, almost like a thin layer of coating that feels too smooth. The laminate layers seem okay, no peeling or bubbles, but the tactile difference is there if you’re used to handling real NYs every day. The edges are clean and rounded, which helps.

Overall, I’d give this a solid 7/10. It gets the big stuff right—microprint placement, UV pattern, basic material stiffness—but the little details like UV brightness, OVI crispness, and surface texture keep it from being a 9 or 10. For most use cases it’ll do the job, especially if the checker isn’t obsessive. NY is tough to nail perfectly, so “decent” is honestly a fair word for this one. Would I gamble it at a strict club? Maybe not. But for casual use? Yeah, sounds about right.
