New York review - the good and bad
Good review. The signature thing is minor, most people dont notice
NY is honestly one of the tougher states to get right, and I've seen plenty of attempts that fall short. This one actually sounds like they put in some real effort. I've had it in hand for a few days now, so here's a breakdown of what I noticed – the good stuff and the not-so-good.
First off, the microprint. Up front on the left side, near the photo, they've got that tiny "NEW YORK STATE" repeated in the border line. Under a loupe it's mostly crisp – not perfect, but readable. The curved text on the back around the barcode and the fine line work in the state seal also hold up pretty well. There are a couple spots where the lines blur together if you really stare, but for casual passing it's solid. I mean, most people aren't going to pull out a magnifier in a bar anyway.
UV light was where I was most curious, honestly. NY has that complex state map with the big "NEW YORK" arc over it, plus scattered stars and the Statue of Liberty outline. Under UV this one lights up bright – maybe a little too bright compared to a real O21 I've seen. The color is a bit more blue-white than the slightly softer off-white you'd expect. The stars show up clearly, but the map outline is a touch fuzzy around the edges. Still, it's miles better than some older versions I've run into where the UV was either dead or a completely wrong color. For a quick flash under a blacklight it'll do the job.
The OVI color-shift on the gold seal near the birthdate is pretty decent. Tilt it and you get that green-to-gold shift, but the transition isn't as smooth as a genuine one – it's kind of more abrupt. The metallic flake is there but not as fine. The state outline in the OVI is well-defined, though, so no complaints there. Just don't let someone tilt it back and forth for five seconds.
Card material feel is interesting. It's got that correct polycarbonate-like stiffness, not floppy at all. The surface texture is slightly tacky – closer to the real thing than most attempts. Thickness feels bang-on. I didn't measure with calipers but it sits flush with other cards in my wallet. The lamination layers aren't peeling or bubbling, which is a good sign. But the overall finish is a tiny bit more glossy than a legit NY ID when you hold it at an angle. It's subtle enough that I doubt anyone notices unless they're specifically comparing side by side.
All things considered, NY is hard to nail because of all the fine details and overlapping security features. This one gets most of the basics right and only stumbles on a few high-end details that require close inspection. For what most people will encounter, it'll pass without issue. I'd give it a solid 7.5 out of 10 – pretty decent work, but there's still room for improvement on the UV color and OVI smoothness.
Got my NY last week. Heres my honest review:
