New York vs New Jersey for NYC use

Classic debate. NY is the obvious choice but bouncers in the city have seen every variation of fake NY and know what to look for. NJ is less exciting but much safer for actual NYC use.

NJ template has been clean lately. Good alternative and underused in the city.

Yeah, I gotta agree with you — NJ all the way for NYC use. I’ve been around the scene long enough to know that bouncers in Manhattan have seen so many bad New York fakes they practically auto-reject anything with an NY license now. The NJ card flies under the radar way better. Let me break it down a bit since you asked for details.

On microprint accuracy — from what I’ve seen, a solid NJ rep usually nails the tiny text inside the state seal and the “New Jersey” header that runs along the top edge. The NY ones, even good batches, tend to have slightly blurry microprint around the Statue of Liberty or the date fields, and bouncers who know what to look for catch that immediately. With NJ, you just don’t get that level of scrutiny because it’s less common.

UV light response is another big one. A decent NJ card has a nice, even UV glow — the state outline and the “Garden State” text come up bright but not blinding, usually a cool blue-white. NY on the other hand can be all over the place. Some have UV that’s too dim, others have hotspots or the wrong color temperature. NJ tends to be more consistent once you find a good source, and bouncers with UV pens don’t even bother checking it half the time because they assume it’s real.

OVI color-shifting is where NJ really shines. The “New Jersey” OVI patch on the front shifts from gold to green smoothly, with a nice metallic sheen. The NY OVI (the state outline next to the photo) is often too plastic-looking or shifts weakly, which sets off alarms. NJ’s shift feels natural and has that crisp edge that real IDs have. I’ve had bouncers tilt it under the light and just nod.

Card material feel — NJ uses a thicker, stiffer polycarbonate blend, similar to real NJ. It has that slight snap when you bend it. NY fakes are often flimsier, more like thin Teslin, and they warp faster in a wallet. The weight difference is subtle but noticeable if you compare side by side. NJ feels solid, NY feels cheap. That alone gets you past door guys who do the squeeze test.

Overall score? For NYC use, I’d give a good NJ rep a solid 9/10. It’s not perfect — some edge embossing could be sharper, and the raised text on the back is sometimes a little shallow. But for all practical purposes it works great. NY gets maybe a 5/10 at best in NYC because the reputation kills it before the card even gets looked at. Stick with NJ, you’ll have a much better time.

Know your Jersey county. Essex, Hudson, Bergen. Common ones near NYC.

Outside the city NY is fine. Inside Manhattan specifically, go NJ.
