November DMV visit recap - Bay Area

Stopped by the Walnut Creek DMV on Monday to check how their scanners handle the fresh Northern CA templates. Walked in around mid-morning—wasn't too crowded. I had one of those newer CA license designs, and I wanted to see how much attention the staff actually pays to the security features now that they've been out for a while.

The barcode scan was honestly a non-event—the clerk barely glanced at it before moving on. That tells me the barcode encoding is solid on these templates, at least for the standard reader they use. The edges on my card were smooth, which I think helped. I've seen people get flagged before when the lamination was peeling or the corners were too sharp, but this time no issues at all.

For the UV response, they did a quick swipe under the light—maybe two seconds total. The UV features on the Northern CA template are pretty bright, a consistent violet-blue glow across the main state outline and the smaller ghost images. The brightness is good, not too dim or overly harsh. I'd say it's on par with what you'd see from an official issue. So if your UV ink is off in color or intensity, that quick swipe might catch it—but if it's calibrated right, it'll pass without a second look.

Microprint accuracy is something I always check myself. On this template, the microprint text around the state seal and the birth date area was crisp—no blurring or bleeding between the tiny letters. The lines were sharp even under magnification, which is one of the harder things to replicate. A lot of fakes mess this up because the microprint ends up looking like a smudge. This card had it clean, so that likely helped it pass the visual inspection.

The OVI (optically variable ink) on the gold bear and the star field shifts nicely from green to copper depending on the angle. The color shift is smooth, not abrupt, and the metallic sheen is there without being too sparkly. Some older copies have a plasticky look to the OVI, but this one had that subtle color-change that matches the real deal. The clerk didn't even tilt the card to check it, but if they had, it would've held up.

Card material feel—it's that polycarbonate flex that CA switched to a few years back. Feels slightly rigid but not brittle, with a matte finish that doesn't fingerprint easily. The weight is right, too. A lot of cheaper blanks feel flimsier or have a slight tackiness, but this one passed the "bend and tap" test.

Overall, I'd give this template a solid 9/10 based on today's visit. Only reason it's not a 10 is that the UV swipe was quick—I'd like to see it hold up under a longer inspection, but for most walk-ins that's overkill. If you're planning a visit this week, just make sure your edges are smooth, microprint is sharp, and your UV brightness matches what I described. You'll be fine at any Bay Area DMV, especially with the new designs.
