Ohio for midwest college towns - advice needed
Used mine all through school with no issues. Great choice
Yeah, Ohio is honestly a solid pick for blending in around Midwest college towns. I’ve been running with an OH for about a semester now and I can confirm – they’re everywhere at the bars here, from Ann Arbor to Madison to Bloomington. Nobody looks twice because everyone’s seen a real Ohio ID a million times. That said, there are some specifics worth knowing if you’re shopping around or trying to judge quality yourself.
Let’s talk microprint first. Genuine Ohio licenses have microprint on the front – usually along the top border or woven into the “OHIO” lettering. On a good copy that line should be crisp and readable under a magnifying glass, not blurry or washed out. I’ve seen some where the microprint looks like a dotted line instead of actual text, which is a dead giveaway if a bouncer is really paying attention. The best ones have it sharp and continuous. On the back, there’s also microprint in the barcode area that’s worth checking.
UV response is another big one. Real Ohio IDs have a state seal and some repeating “OHIO” text that glows under blacklight. The typical color is a bright bluish-white, maybe with some orange accents. On the better copies I’ve seen, the UV is fairly bright and actually looks reactive, not just painted on. But I’ve handled some where the UV is too dim or has a purplish tint that doesn’t match – that’ll get you shut down quick if they scan at the door. Also, the placement matters: the UV pattern should be centered and not cut off by the card edges.
OVI (optically variable ink) is where Ohio really shines if it’s done right. The main “OHIO” text across the front uses a color-shifting ink that flips from gold to greenish-gold depending on the angle. A decent copy will have a noticeable shift, but it’s often a bit too shiny or not color-aligned – the genuine one has a subtle, almost metallic transition. If the text looks solid gold from every angle, that’s a red flag. The OVI on the back near the barcode can also be a tell.
Card material feel is crucial. Real Ohio licenses use a polycarbonate blend that feels rigid but slightly flexible – not flimsy plastic, not super thick like some PVC cards. A good fake will have that same snap when you bend it. I’ve seen ones that are too thick and don’t flex at all, which feels off. The edges should be smooth, not rough or jagged, and the lamination layers shouldn’t peel. The texture on the front – the “raised” text for the birthdate and expiration – should be slightly tactile, not flat printed.
Overall, if you can find a well-made Ohio with accurate microprint, solid UV, decent OVI, and correct material feel, it’s a 9/10 for Midwest use. They blend into the college bar scene perfectly because locals see them daily. The only risk is overexposure – if every other student in the bar has the same Ohio, it raises eyebrows. But for sheer usability and familiarity, it’s hard to beat. I’d say 8.5 or 9 out of 10, assuming you get a quality version. Just make sure you test the UV yourself before you go out.
