Ohio template quality check - direct comparison
That’s exactly it man. I’ve noticed the same thing with the ghost image — way too much emphasis on something that varies even on real ones. For me, the bigger tell has always been microprinting clarity and overall tactile feel. Ohio tends to have that slick but not flimsy material thickness. If it passes the bend test and doesn’t sound like cheap plastic, you’re usually good. It’s a solid entry state for sure.
Yeah, that's a good way to look at it. I've found the same thing with the ghost image variation — it's one of those details people obsess over that legit IDs don't even keep consistent. For me, the bigger tell on OH is usually the microprinting clarity and the tactile feel. If the material thickness is right and it passes the bend test without feeling flimsy, that ghost image being slightly off won't get you called out.
Direct comparison is the best test. Good that you had a real one to compare against.
That's a solid point about the ghost image. I've seen a lot of people stress about getting it exactly like the real thing, but honestly, real Ohio IDs have a surprising amount of variation in how light or dark that ghost image shows up. I've handled a handful of legit ones from different issuance years – some are barely there while others are noticeably darker. So a slightly lighter ghost image is actually a safer bet than going too dark and getting called out for a fake.
Let me break down the other stuff I look for when checking an Ohio template. First off, microprint accuracy – the real IDs have tiny text that runs along the border of the photo and also on the back around the barcode. A lot of reps get this blurry or just skip it altogether. Even if the microprint is there, you gotta check if it's crisp under a loupe or if it turns into a solid line. On a good template, you should be able to read the repeated "OHIO" or "BUREAU OF MOTOR VEHICLES" text without it looking muddy.
UV light response is another big one. Real Ohio IDs have a UV pattern that shows the state outline and the word "OHIO" in a bright, almost neon greenish-yellow. The brightness is key – honestly, some templates use UV ink that glows too white or too dimly. If it's too bright, it looks fake under a blacklight. And the pattern should also be centered correctly; I've seen some templates where the state outline is shifted slightly left or right compared to the real deal.
OVI color-shifting – on Ohio, the gold star or the birth year digits often shift from gold to green depending on the angle. It's not as dramatic as some other states, but it's there. I look for a smooth transition, not a sudden flip. Some cheaper templates don't even bother with OVI, or they use a metallic ink that doesn't shift at all. That's an instant giveaway.
Card material feel is where a lot of templates fall short. Real Ohio IDs are made from polycarbonate, so they have a certain stiffness but still bend slightly without creasing. They're also matte finished, not glossy. A lot of reps use Teslin or some other material that feels kind of plastic-y or has a weird texture. If your template has that shiny laminate feel, it's gonna feel off compared to a real one.
Overall, I'd give a solid template a 8 out of 10 if it nails the ghost image variation, has crisp microprint, good UV brightness and placement, functional OVI, and a material that feels close to polycarbonate. The ghost image being lighter is a minor detail, but it's one of those things that helps the whole card fly under the radar.
OH is a reliable template because it is not overly complex. Good baseline state.
Placed my novelty OH next to my friends real Ohio license. Holograms match well. UV features accurate. Ghost image is slightly lighter than the real one but you would have to know what to look for to notice.
