Texas O21 vs U21 - Which should I get?
Yeah, I've seen this question pop up a lot and honestly the answer hasn't changed. Always go O21. The U21 Texas is just a headache waiting to happen, and it's not worth the trouble if you're trying to buy alcohol or get into bars. Let me break it down from a technical standpoint so you know what you're actually dealing with.
First off, the microprint accuracy on O21 Texas fakes is generally way more consistent. The tiny "TEXAS" text around the photo border and the micro-printed state outlines are crisper because the template has been refined over years. U21 versions are vertical, which already throws bouncers off because they're less familiar with the layout. The microprint on a lot of U21 attempts comes out blurry or partially missing, especially around the Capitol building and the bicentennial star. I've seen U21 copies where the "Lone Star" microprint inside the star is just a smudge. Not good.
UV response is another dealbreaker. Real Texas O21 IDs have a very specific UV overlay – the state outline glows a bright bluish-white with a slight green tint, and the repeating "TEXAS" pattern is evenly distributed. Most high-quality O21 fakes nail this these days. U21 fakes? The UV is often too dim, has a weird yellow cast, or the pattern is misaligned because the template isn't as widely produced. I've had a U21 that passed dim light but under a proper UV lamp the "TEXAS" text was fragmented. Instant fail.
OVI color-shifting on the "LONE STAR" text and the 21+ gold circle is another area where O21 shines. The genuine OVI shifts from green to gold – it should have a metallic sheen that isn't too plasticky. O21 replicas have gotten this down to about 90% accuracy with the right foil. U21 versions often use a cheaper foil that looks more like a sticker, especially under direct light. The color shift is sluggish or only changes at extreme angles. You'll get called out on that quick.
As for card material feel, Texas IDs are made of Teslin with a specific tactile sensation – matte but not chalky, with a slight flexibility. Most O21 fakes use a similar polycarbonate or composite that gets the weight and bend right. U21 fakes tend to be thinner and have a glossier finish because the laminates used aren't the same. Real U21 IDs have the same material as O21, but the vertical orientation makes the edges feel different when you handle it. If the thickness is off even by a hair, it's noticeable, especially at bars where they check dozens of IDs a night.
Overall, I'd give a well-made Texas O21 a solid 9/10 – it's one of the better state fakes out there if the microprint and UV are on point. U21? I'd put it at a 6/10 at best. Too many variables, too many places that don't even know what a real U21 looks like, and the risk of getting denied or worse is just not worth it. Stick with O21 and save yourself the headache.
