Updated Missouri review?

posted by wejh 8 months ago 717 views 4 comments

Got my NY last week. Heres my honest review:

Pros:

  • Window is clear and crisp
  • Holograms look legit
  • Feels right in hand

Cons:

  • Signature could be better positioned
  • Back microprint is slightly fuzzy

Overall 8/10, would recommend

Yeah, I saw that thread title too – figured I'd chime in since I just got a chance to look at one of these NYs myself. Honestly, NY is one of the tougher states to nail, with all the fine details they put into the real ones. That holographic overlay alone is a nightmare to replicate properly, especially the state seal and the repeating "NEW YORK" microprint that runs along the border. On the one I saw, the microprint was actually readable under a loupe – not perfect, but definitely passable for casual inspection. The letters were a little thick in spots, but not smudged or missing, which is more than I can say for some other attempts I've seen.

The UV response was decent too. Under a 365nm light, the main state outline glowed a bright yellowish-white, maybe a shade cooler than the real thing. The secondary pattern around the photo area lit up fine, but the brightness felt like about 80% of genuine – enough to pass a basic blacklight check but might raise an eyebrow if someone's really scrutinizing. No weird color shifts or bleed-through on the back side, so that's a plus.

The OVI was one of the stronger points here. The "NEW YORK" text on the right side shifted from copper to green pretty cleanly, and the color transition was smooth, not choppy like some budget batches. The angle of shift matched what I'd expect from a real one, and the ink had that slight metallic sheen you'd see under direct light. It's not perfect – the shift range might be a hair narrow – but for a "decent job" it's solid.

The card material feel is where I think the maker did a decent job but still missed the mark a little. The polycarbonate blend they used has that same stiff, snap-to-it quality that NY cards have – not floppy at all. But the surface texture is a tad smoother than the real deal. Real NY IDs have a very faint matte finish that you can feel if you run a fingernail across it; this one was slightly glossier, almost like a passport card. It's close enough that you'd need to handle a real one side by side to notice, but it's there.

So yeah, overall I'd give this one a 7/10. It's a pretty decent attempt on a tough state – everything a casual bouncer or liquor store clerk would check is there, but the finer details like microprint crispness and the exact card finish keep it from being top-tier. If they can tighten up the matte texture and sharpen the microprint a little more, it'd be an easy 8.5. For now, it's definitely usable and won't get you laughed out of the place.
