The ghost image window on Washington state driver licenses is a feature I've been specifically tracking across recent WA vendor orders. It's one of the details that separates quality production from cut-rate work on this state, and vendor accuracy on it varies more than you'd expect.
What the genuine WA ghost image looks like
On the genuine WA DL, the ghost image sits in the lower-left area of the card front. It's a small secondary photo — roughly 15mm wide — rendered in black and white at low contrast. The image is intentionally faint; under direct overhead light it reads as a slightly darker region of the card more than a clear photograph. In raking light (holding the card at a low angle to a light source) the face becomes clearly visible.
The ghost image on genuine cards is embedded below the surface laminate, not printed on top, which gives it a slightly recessed quality. The edge of the image window fades gradually into the surrounding card rather than having a defined cutoff.
MagicIDs WA card
Ghost image is present, correctly positioned in the lower-left, and sized accurately. Contrast is slightly higher than genuine — more visible at straight-on viewing angles than the genuine card. Under raking light it looks close to genuine. The fade toward the window edge is gradual, which is the detail most vendors get wrong. Good rendering overall.
IDGod WA card
Ghost image is present but positioned too far left, partially overlapping the card-edge zone. Size is slightly small. Contrast is within normal range. The edge fade is abrupt rather than gradual — there's a clear defined edge where genuine has a soft fade. This is the most common IDGod WA ghost image issue across multiple orders I've seen.
KingOfFakes WA card
Positioning is correct. Size is slightly large — wider than genuine. Contrast goes the opposite direction from IDGod: KingOfFakes renders the ghost image too faint, barely visible even under raking light. Under direct overhead light it's essentially invisible, which undershoots the genuine card's intentional-but-present faintness.
For WA ghost image inspection: check positioning first (lower-left, not touching card edge), then contrast in raking light, then edge fade character. Gradual fade versus abrupt cutoff is the fastest differentiator between accurate and inaccurate rendering on this feature.
